MEDIEVAL CAIRO: A Glimpse of Egypt’s Heritage

Minarets are Cairo’s joy and ornament. Rising from the haze of crowded, crumbling streets in the old, chaotic, yet picturesque medieval Cairo, they dominate the city’s skyline.

Major mosques worth visiting include the mosque of Muhammad Ali, Al Hakim mosque, the Ibn Tulun mosque-one of the largest mosque in the world and the Al Azhar mosque which houses the oldest university in the world(from 970AD).
Perhaps the most marvelous part of Medieval Cairo is the Citadel, a medieval fortress perched on a hill overlooking the entire Nile Valley and Cairo. The Citadel is one of the world’s greatest monuments to medieval warfare.

Palace of Yashbak is considered of the beautiful sites in Cairo, and is the ruin backing on to the rear of the garden of the tomb of Hassan Sadeq. It was built in 1330.

There are about 150 sites of historical interest in Medieval Cairo; therefore it should make your list of top ten attractions in Egypt. Also remember, that Egypt is a destination the whole world keeps its eyes at, so cheap flights to Egypt may not be available at the last minute reservation and booking in advance is a better option.
